$20 Million for Kidney Cancer Research Funding

In 2016, Action to Cure Kidney Cancer was instrumental in securing a $10 million line item for kidney cancer research in the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The new program was named Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP). Grant proposals were accepted starting September 2017, and grants were awarded in early 2018 with projects commencing by September 30, 2018. To read about this historic accomplishment, skip to Blog & Video below.

In 2017, we were joined in support by other kidney cancer groups and other organizations such as the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association as we asked for and received a $5 million increase to $15 million for the KCRP. Applications were received in early October 2018, and grants will be awarded by September 30, 2019.

In 2018, ACKC made a special plea to the appropriators for another $5 million increase to cover a special initiative. Congress agreed with this request and, in September 2018, the FY2019 Defense Appropriations bill included $20 million for the KCRP. Applications for this program will be accepted in the fall of 2019 and grants will be awarded in 2020.

The $20 million KCRP represents a 44% increase in the total Federal budget, i.e., KCRP + NCI funding, for kidney cancer research! We are hopeful that their projects and others to follow in this program will lead to advances that will provide more effective treatment, and an eventual cure for kidney cancer.
