Campaign Breakthrough

For 12 years, ACKC had been advocating for increased federal funding for kidney cancer research, and in 2017 we have finally had a major breakthrough. The House of Representatives included a $10 million line-item for kidney cancer research in the Defense Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2017 (October 1, 2016 – September 30, 2017).  At the behest of Congress, DoD created the Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP), selected the grantees after a rigorous competition, and awarded  grants at the end of September 2018.

For FY2018, we asked for a $5 million increase to the FY2017 for the KCRP. Congress approved this increase, and kidney cancer researchers and the program was increased to $15 million. All the grants were negotiated with the awardees institution and awarded by September 30th of 2018.

For FY2019, ACKC was joined by a number of kidney cancer and other organizations asking for an increase in KCRP to $20 million. Congress also approved this funding amount and awarded all the grants by this past September 30th. To put it in perspective, the $20 funding for KCRP equals 44% of this year’s entire budget for kidney cancer research.

For FY2020, we have asked for $30 million. The House approved this amount, but the Senate has not yet voted on it, an Congress has yet to approve any FY2020 funding as they have been passing Continuing Resolutions wit the next deadline on December 20th.
